What is a flight reservation hold?
A flight reservation hold is a genuine booking made in your name in the airline's reservation system. It has a real booking reference (PNR), a real itinerary and real dates – but no ticket is issued and no flight is paid. The booking exists for a limited time and is released automatically afterwards.
How is it different from a ticket?
With a ticket, the airline is paid a fare and a seat is allocated for you. With a hold, the reservation sits in the system without payment. You cannot board with it – it exists as proof that you have a planned itinerary, which is exactly what consulates, visa centres and border authorities ask to see.
Why do consulates accept it?
Embassies and visa centres (VFS, BLS, TLScontact) ask for a reservation, not a paid ticket – they explicitly warn applicants not to buy a ticket before the visa is approved. A hold satisfies the requirement because it is a real, verifiable booking, and you risk nothing if the visa is refused.
How long does a hold last?
HoldFare offers three lengths: 72 hours, 7 days and 21 days. The same booking reference stays valid for the whole period, so if the consulate checks it a week after you submitted your application, they find exactly the booking you filed.
What happens when the hold ends?
The reservation is released automatically. You do not need to cancel anything and no airline is left unpaid – the booking simply ceases to exist. If you later need a real ticket for the same route, you buy it separately with any airline or travel agency.
