Fake flight reservations: how to spot them before they cost you

Search for a dummy ticket and you will find hundreds of offers. Some are genuine reservation services; others sell edited templates or random booking references that were never made in any airline system. Submitting those can end a visa application on the spot.

How fake reservations are made

The crude versions are edited screenshots or PDFs with a made-up six-letter reference. Slightly better ones reuse a reference from someone else's real booking – which shows a different name and route the moment an officer checks it.

How consulates catch them

A booking reference is checked against the airline's reservation system in seconds. Verification can be done by the visa centre itself, the embassy, or the airline when you later try to use the document. Name, route and dates must all match your application.

What a genuine hold looks like

A real reservation hold is created in the airline's own reservation system in the traveller's name, with the exact route and dates. You receive a confirmation with the reference, and anyone holding the reference and your last name can verify the booking online at any time.

How to protect yourself

Before paying any service, check that the booking can be verified independently – by you, not just by them. A verifiable reference, clear company details and a real support e-mail are the minimum. If the price looks like a fantasy and there is nothing to verify, walk away.
